How long have you been in business?
The Academy has been in Bellevue since 1991. My wife and I purchased the business in 2000.

How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Once I started training in Martial Arts, I knew this was something that I had drive for. As I came up in ranks at the Academy of Koei-Kan Karate-Do, I had the opportunity to teach. This is when I discovered I was passionate for developing students. How I ended up at the Bellevue Koei-Kan in 2000: I was looking to expand our style and open another location. At the same time my partner was looking to grow her healing arts business and was also passionate about her martial arts training. Circumstances made it possible for the two of us to purchase the Bellevue Academy. We jumped at the chance and have not looked back ever since.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
What differentiates my business in the area is - The martial arts system I teach and how I teach. The Koei-Kan system has some unique skill sets that are either exclusive to Koei-Kan or are not widely used in many karate-do styles. Namely the use of full-contact with armor and our system of dodging and footwork. We are also a style that is well adept to all transitions of hand to hand combat. Karate is known for its stand up skills in punching and kicking. At Koei-Kan we have a developed not only stand up fighting, but a system of throwing and grappling that allows students to have skills no matter where they are fighting from.
When it comes to developing students, I believe there must be a mutual trust and honest relationship. I operate through inter-dependance rather than a power over paradigm found with so many Instructors, including the system I teach. I feel it is important to remain approachable for all my students regardless of rank. I develop and teach people how to train for themselves and with others while honoring the traditional values of our martial arts system.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
I have one location which is a dedicated full-time martial arts Academy. We teach enrichment and after school programs off-site. I have Instructors who are currently looking to open their own schools in the Washington and surrounding areas. You can find other privately owned Koei-Kan Karate-Do schools in the US and in several other countries.
